Lesson 7.4

Your next steps

Reviewed June 2026 About 2 minutes to read

Information, not legal advice. Applies in England. Reviewed June 2026.

Look how far you have come. You started this course feeling like the system was stacked against you. Now you understand the psychology behind a “no”, you know your rights, you can read a plan and spot a gap, you know your deadlines, you can hold your ground in a meeting, you can put it in writing, and you know when to bring in help and how to choose it. You are now the expert in your child’s case. Nobody knows it better than you.

The system can feel stacked against you. It is not stacked as badly as it feels. The law is largely on the side of children with SEND, the SEND Tribunal is built for parents to use without a lawyer, and most families who get organised and use the free help available do far better than they expect. (This applies in England; the law differs in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.)

Top tip
Take one step at a time. Pick the single next action from whichever lesson matters most for you right now, do that one thing, and come back for the next. You do not have to do it all today.

Where to go next. Keep IPSEA and your local SENDIASS close: they are free, and they are your sense-check for anything that affects a deadline or a decision. Use the templates and scripts you have learned. And when you want done-for-you meeting scripts and printable tools to use alongside this course, the tool below is built for exactly that.

You are doing a hard thing, and you are doing it well. One step at a time is enough.

Important: This is general information, not legal advice, and it applies to England. SEN law, statutory timescales and guidance can change, and every child's situation is different.
